Medeski Martin & Wood: Radiolarians II

The second record in a planned series of three, entitled The Radiolarians Series, Radiolarians II will hit streets tomorrow, April 14.

Released through Medeski Martin & Wood's own Indirecto Records, Radiolarians II consists of music that was written, tested on tour, then recorded all during the Summer of 2008.

The concept behind The Radiolarians Series, according to MMW, is to invert the record release cycle by writing the material, developing it on tour, then recording in the studio after the tour ends. Once each set of Radiolarians songs are finished, the band puts them to rest before the next tour; thus creating three unique records and three distinct live tours.

Radiolarians I was released in September 2008. Radiolarians III will be released in 2009 with a special box set of the series to follow.

No sooner had his latest Timbaland produced R&B album, Scream dropped before ex-Soundgarden front man, Chris Cornell inadvertently insighted a twitter riot and sent music blogs abuzz with nothing but rancid reviews. And who better to jump in and pile on than Mr. techno toy savvy, Janes Addiction therapist, Trent Reznor himself.
Rollingstone.com's Rock Daily is reporting that Reznor recently posted the following to his twitter account. “You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell’s record? Jesus,”
Apparently Amazon.com has been running a promotion to buy the album for $2.99.
Chris Cornell hasn't been Chris Cornell in quite sometime. Props for having the balls to experiment with your music and test your creative boundaries but its time to reel it in Chris! The day you left Soundgarden was the day we lost a truly great front man and a rock icon. Audioslave was a mediocre experiment that never could live up to either Rage Against the Machine or Soundgarden and was like if Robert Plant quit Zeppelin and recorded two albums with the Doors.
Also, dude we get it, you're handsome. Now put your shirt back on, throw away your Michael Jackson records and get on the Tweet with Matt, Ben and Kim! If you hurry and ask nicely maybe we'll all forget Scream and you could squeeze onto the NIN/JA tour completing the greatest trifecta of reunited rock ever to tour together. NIN/JA/SOUND anyone???

The Buzz Bin: Helms Alee

And the Crazy Train keeps a rollin. Unbelievable how many bands Black Sabbath have influenced not just in Seattle but worldly in the realm of (insert label here) or "Post Rock" as some see fit. Sure there are many names that come to mind to share the honors in today's music (Melvins, Big Black, Jesus Lizard) but the roots have seeded many great alternative bands like Pelican, These Arms Are Snakes, Made Out of Babies and Explosions in the Sky. Helms Alee is a great newish addition and trio to add to the list. Ben Verellen fronts the band with giant power chords and dramatic solos while sharing the mic with bassist Dana James and drummer Hozoji Matheson-Margullis. If you haven't seen "Hozi" play its a privledge and she's easy on the eyes too. Not a common Melvins thread for sure! Hozi also sings and plays guitar for Lozen and 2 piece project with Justine Valdez. Check out Lozens myspace here. Helms Alee released Night Terror in August of 2008 on Hydra Head Records.

Rollingstone.com is reporting that the Beastie Boys have nearly completed their 8th studio album slated to drop in the summer or fall of 2009. Adam Yauch (MCA) was quoted as saying, “It’s a pretty weird record" and will contain, “a lot of rhyming and playing and sampling—all combined.” A possible name for the record is Tad Lock’s Glasses, which apparentlly is a reference to the band's bus drivers eye wear. Republicans, Democrats criticize Jindal's speech
By BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK – Insane. Childish. Disaster. And those were some of the kinder comments from political pundits about Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and his response to President Barack Obama's speech to Congress on Tuesday night. Jindal, 37, a Rhodes scholar and son of Indian immigrants, is considered a rising star in Republican ranks and a likely 2012 presidential candidate.

GOP leaders, looking for a fresh face for the party's image, tapped Jindal earlier this month for the high-profile task of rebutting Obama's first address to a joint session of Congress.
But in both style and substance, Jindal's speech has drawn flak from Republicans and Democrats alike.
His criticism of government spending for emergency economic relief has been widely panned, especially given his state's receipt of billions in federal assistance after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. And Jindal's voice and earnest, awkward delivery have drawn comparisons to Kenneth Parcell, the geeky page on the NBC comedy "30 Rock."

Indeed, a new Facebook group titled "Bobby Jindal is Kenneth the Page" had already attracted more than 1,800 members Wednesday afternoon.
Republicans had high hopes for Jindal after his appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," where he delivered a forceful, concise critique of Obama's $787 billion stimulus plan and explained his decision to reject some of the money allotted for his state. He also impressed observers when he spoke to reporters after a meeting with Obama and other governors at the White House Monday.

Jindal spoke from the governor's mansion in Baton Rouge, and critics pounced on his remarks almost immediately, panning everything from his overly folksy demeanor to his complaint that Obama's plan to revive the economy was "irresponsible." David Brooks, a conservative New York Times columnist who has criticized aspects of the stimulus plan, nonetheless called Jindal's arguments "insane" and tone-deaf given the dire economic challenges the country faces.

"It came off as amateurish, and even the tempo in which he spoke was singsongy," Williams said, adding that the content of the speech was "very simplistic and almost childish." Penni Pier, a political communication specialist at Iowa's Wartburg College, said Jindal's presentation was overly colloquial and his message of less government and more tax cuts was substantively thin.

To be sure, Jindal had a tough act to follow in Obama, a naturally gifted orator whose argument for vast federal intervention to stem the nation's economic crisis was widely praised. A CNN poll taken after his speech found 92 percent of viewers had a positive reaction to it.

Jindal was headed to Disney World Wednesday with his family for a vacation. But his chief of staff, Timmy Teepell, said his boss had prepared carefully for the speech and that his message was strong.

"It's a challenge for anybody to follow Obama. The guy is one of the most gifted speakers of our generation," Teepell said. "Bobby's his own harshest critic. He's always looking for ways to improve."

I couldn't believe my eyes! All of a sudden I look up and the camera zooms in on a hallway live in New Orleans and this wacked out dude comes strolling around the corner with the oddest choreographed entrance and speech I have ever witnessed. It didn't even matter what he actually said at this point, and what he said was unbelievablly transparent and lame... I was so transfixed on this freak's mannerisms and awkwardness. The Republican Party has never looked so pathetic!!! If President Obama's speech read like a Lebron James tomahawk jam, Bobby Jindal responded with a dribble off his hightops out of bounds!

Throwing that guy out there like that wreaks of republican deperation, "Go get em young minority guy, you're the future of our party, go be your ethnic self." "Oh and don't forget to compare yourself with the President and how you are the son of immigrants too." "That's hot right now!" We are so much closer to Idiocracy than Mike Judge ever realized. Republicans, if you can find an African American ex-Wrestler Rapper in the next 3 years and work him into the party's agenda you are golden...(that ones a freebie)...!

Obviously not overshadowed by this ridiculous fool's response was our new President's well delivered and hopeful speech. Hopefully his actions will ring as loudly and as true as his voice. So far so good B! And Bobby Jindal, may you enjoy many a Grenade and Hurricane and frolic in the streets of Mardi Gras forever... politics just aint in your cards homeslice...- BT

White Stripes on Late Night with Conan O'Brien

Last night, Conan O'Brien bid adieu to the bright lights of New York City and his Late Night with Conan O'Brien gig for the glitz and glam of Hollywood and the reigns of The Tonight Show.

Helping to send him off in style were The White Stripes, making their first live performance since 2007.

"I wasn't sure this could happen," O'Brien said. "I am personally very thrilled that we could make this happen this evening. Please welcome our good friends for many years, The White Stripes."

NIN Tour w/ Jane's Addiction Then "Disappear"?

In a post titled "A note from Trent and a wave goodbye" on the official Nine Inch Nails website, Trent Reznor suggested NIN will go on hiatus after one last trek across the globe with alternative-rock pioneers Jane's Addiction in tow.

"In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year," Reznor wrote.

"I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing," he continued.

No dates have been scheduled for the tour as of yet. Stay tuned!

Sonic Youth: The Eternal

Sonic Youth, one of the most innovative and influential bands of the past 30 years, have announced details for their upcoming 16th studio album.

Having completed their contractual obligations to Geffen with 2006's Rather Ripped, SY move back into the realm of independent labels with the release of The Eternal on Matador Records.

Recorded through November and December of '08 at the band's Echo Canyon West studio, and produced by John Agnello and SY, The Eternal will hit streets in vinyl, compact disc, and digital formats on June 9.

The Eternal not only serves as the studio debut of ex-Pavement bassist Mark Ibold as a full-time member of SY, but also includes -- for the first time -- several tracks featuring shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee.

Meanwhile, according to his official website, Johnny Marr has returned to the UK to play a few gigs with West Yorkshire indie rockers The Cribs.

Marr began penning a few tracks with the brothers Jarman (Gary, Ryan, and Ross) during the fall of '08 and soon after was announced as an official member of The Cribs. The foursome plan on heading to Los Angeles soon to enter the studio with producer Nick Launey who has worked with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Public Image Ltd.

The Murder City Devils Prepare West Coast Tour

Seattle-based garage punkers The Murder City Devils are packing up the vans and heading down the coast.

Since disbanding in 2001, The Murder City Devils have reunited for a handful of shows and festivals including Seattle's Capitol Hill Block Party in 2006 and the Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX, in 2007. Now they're back at it again!

The band's original lineup are set to begin an 8-date jaunt down the I-5 beginning in Seattle on February 11 and ending in Los Angeles on February 18.

The Informers To Hit Theatres In April

Based on the collection of short stories of the same name by Brett Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero and American Psycho), The Informers is an alternately blistering and chilling portrait of hedonism run amok.

Adapting his own acclaimed novel for the screen, Ellis returns to 1980's Los Angeles with a multi-strand narrative that balances a vast array of characters who represent both the privileged (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the disadvantaged (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con). Intertwining the strands are the quintessential Ellis protagonists -- a group of beautiful, well-to-do young men and women who sleep all day and party all night.

Released through Senator Entertainment US and directed by acclaimed Australian director Gregor Jordan (Ned Kelly and Buffalo Soldiers), The Informers stars Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke, Winona Ryder, Jon Foster, and Amber Heard.

The film will open in New York and Los Angeles on April 10th.

Depeche Mode: Sounds Of The Universe

Depeche Mode have announced the track list for their forthcoming 12th studio album, Sounds Of The Universe.

To be released April 21 through Mute, Sounds Of The Universe reunites the British synth-pop legends with producer Ben Hillier, whom the lads last worked with on 2005's Playing The Angel.

The album will be preceded by the release of the album's first single, "Wrong," which will hit streets on April 9.

The Wooden Birds Join Barsuk

Andrew Kenny, best known as the singer/songwriter behind mellow indie favorites American Analog Set, has a new project titled The Wooden Birds. With arrangements described as "more vocal- and percussion-heavy than anything [Andrew Kenny's] done before," The Wooden Birds' first album, Magnolia, will be released this spring on Barsuk Records in the US and Canada, and on Morr Music in Europe.

The Wooden Birds also feature Ola Padrida songwriter David Wingo, American Analog Set collaborator Leslie Sisson, Lymbic System drummer Michael Bell, and co-producer Chris Michaels.

Silver Jews Disband; David Berman Bares His Soul

In a thread titled "Silver Jews End-Lead Singer Bids His Well-Wishers Adieu" on the Silver Jews' bulletin board on the Drag City Records' website, David Berman announced that he is "moving over to another category" -- mentioning screenwriting or muckraking as possibilities. "I'm a writer, see?" he said.

Not wanting to turn into a "careerist" and fearing "accidentally [writing] the answer song to 'Shiny Happy People'," Berman said "I always said we would stop before we got bad."

The Silver Jews are scheduled to play one final show Saturday, January 31, in Tennessee's Cumberland Caverns, located 333 feet underground the Cumberland Plateau.

In a surprising separate post on the same thread Berman said, "Now that the Joos are over I can tell you my gravest secret. Worse than suicide, worse than crack addiction: My father." Berman reveals his father to be Richard Berman, a Washington-based industry lobbyist and founder of Berman and Company -- a public affairs firm known for working to advance the interests of big business over that of consumers.

According to http://www.bermanexposed.org/, Berman and Company has "fought unions, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, PETA and other watchdog groups in their efforts to raise awareness about obesity, the minimum wage, the dangers of smoking, mad cow disease, drunk driving, and other causes."

Berman writes of his father: "My father is a despicable man. My father is a sort of human molestor (sic). An exploiter. A scoundrel. A world historical motherfucking son of a bitch."

Hey kids...Wow, it's been almost an entire month without a peep from the Tecate Bros. -- And what a crazy month it's been.

An extended hospital stay for my son; a horrific case of the flu, a monster sinus infection, and a nasty eye infection that's had me down and out for over three weeks; a sad and untimely death in the family; and a dead laptop display that needed intensive surgery to revive.

But here we are...still trudging forward and ready to bring the Tecate Bros. blog into '09 with a vengeance.

Watching today's inauguration of President Barack Obama (wow, that's nice to say)...my head has been filled with a single song playing over and over and over: John Lennon's "Imagine". In a time of such distress in our country and in our world, there is hope. I won't go into a political tirade, but I will imagine...

Still going strong after all these years, Moz is scheduled to release a new studio album, Years Of Refusal, February 17, 2009, through Attack/Lost Highway Records. Years Of Refusal was produced by the late Jerry Finn who last worked with Moz on 2005's You Are The Quarry. Jerry Finn passed away August 21st, when he was taken off life support after suffering a cerrebral hemorrage in July and never regaining consciousness.

In perhaps an effort to appease irritated fans' anticipation of the bands 2nd full length album in ...lets see..saw them at the Casbah in 1999.. Um... 10 years? Autolux has released an instrumental track entitled,

"Fat Kid" which will not appear on the new album "Transit Transit", slated to be released after the new year. The band's spokesmen, Robert Densworth(errrrrrrrrrr Eugene/Karla/Gregg)posted a blog on Nov 27th stating that "if there are sounds on it that remind you of a tuba or tympani - that happens to be greg getting those sounds out of his guitar." Densworth also said the song wil be available for download on itunes in a couple of weeks and that the band was "dealing with getting the business end of the music squared away."

Let me go semi-Pitchfork here and say, are you serious....? "Fat Kid", Ok....neat! Now never play, sell or perform this song again... This isn't why we remain loyal fans while you continuously cancel shows and barely acknowledge and almost loathe our existence as fans of your art....! Thanks, but no thanks! Fat Kid sucks! Its just some fragmented guitar noises on a loop and a live recorded drum loop in a sort of attempt to create a breakbeat....but its done poorly and is extremely uninnovative and unautolux.
Autolux, dont release something to the public that is half ass and no where near the genius you contain as a band. It just pisses us of! And if you are reading this and saying to yourself, "I didnt think it was soo bad..." then you are a tool. All of us can make "FatKid" with an iMac and a sugarhigh..!

As another fan consolation, the band will also be performing live at the Henry Fonda Theatre on January 17th in Los Angeles. Tickets are only $18, but dont get your hopes up the odds of them actually going onstage are low. - BT

Return Of The Jesus Lizard

According to a post on the Touch And Go/Quarterstick Records website, noise-rock legends The Jesus Lizard will reunite for a brief tour in 2009.

The original lineup of David Yow, Duane Denison, David Wm. Sims, and Mac McNeilly, will embark on a "fleeting reunion" beginning with the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the UK on May 9 and 10, and ending with a blowout finale in Chicago sometime in late November. The ATP gig will be the band's first show since 1999 and the band's first show in 12 years to feature the original lineup.

No word yet on whether the band will hit the left coast or if there are any plans on visiting the recording studio.

In celebration of the reunion, Touch And Go Records plans to reissue Head, Goat, Liar, and Down in May 2009. The remastered recordings, to be available on both LP and CD, will include expanded packaging and liner notes. Original session engineer Steve Albini will sit in on the remastering project.

John Frusciante: The Empyrean

According to a post on his official website, Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist John Frusciante is set to release his tenth solo album, The Empyrean, on January 20, 2009, via Record Collection.

Recorded between December 2006 and March 2008, Frusciante says the album "is a concept record that tells a single story both musically and lyrically. The story takes place within one person, and there are two characters."

The album includes a cover version of Tim Buckley's "Song To The Siren" as well as guest appearances by Flea, Sonus Quartet, Johnny Marr, and The New Dimension Singers.

The latest film from Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, 28 Days Later...), Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai who is one question away from winning 20 million rupees on India's version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, the police arrest him for cheating. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slums, his adventures on the road, and the girl he loved and lost. Through his increasingly layered story, Jamal slowly reveals how he learned the answers to the show's difficult questions, as well as what this young man who has no apparent desire for riches is doing on the gameshow in the first place.

Slumdog Millionaire is in theaters on a limited release now, and is scheduled for a wide release November 27.

Thank you for your letter concerning impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond.

In our last national election, voters expressed clear disapproval with the path this country is on. They are tired of partisan politics and of an Administration that pays little heed to the wishes of the American people. They want-and deserve-a Congress that holds the Administration accountable and fulfills its Constitutional responsibility to check and balance the Executive branch. I share this sentiment and am determined to work hard in the United States Senate to promote issues that are of real concern to most Americans, including the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, homeland security, global warming, and the current state of our economy.

At this time, however, I believe that impeachment proceedings against President Bush will only divide the country even further, frustrating our hopes for a meaningful change in direction, while having little chance of success.

I have been deeply disappointed by many of this Administration's actions and have been outspoken in those instances. Nevertheless, given the challenges our country faces I believe that we need to focus on constructive and cooperative steps that would lead us in the right direction. It is my hope that the next Presidential Administration's actions will more accurately reflect the will of the people.

FloodTecate Emerges from Exile

In a rare public appearance, FloodTecate has emerged from a self-imposed exile to quell rumors he has joined Magnetic Mornings.

"No truth to that." said Flood. "I've been on the road for the past two months as Ryan Adams sobriety coach and personal recording engineer, which has been a tough assignment since I've been partying pretty hard with the rest of the band, and I keep forgetting to press the record button on the digital 8-track when Ryan asks me to."

When asked if he ever considered joining Magnetic Mornings, Flood was blunt: "I'm still trying to get a guest spot on the Scott Ford Radio Show so Magnetic Mornings is not a consideration right now."

Flood is currently working on an as yet-named solo album that focuses on specific guitar chords he knows the shapes to, but not the names.

The Associated Press has just reported that Exxon Mobil Corp., the world's largest publicly traded oil company, reported income Thursday that shattered its own record for the biggest profit from operations by a U.S. corporation, earning $14.83 billion in the third quarter.

The Irving, Texas-based company has reported unprecedented back-to-back quarters, the end of the most recent coinciding with a rapid plunge in crude prices. Benchmark oil prices fell another $2.21 to $65.29 Thursday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, about 56 percent off record highs in July.

Exxon said net income jumped nearly 58 percent to $2.86 a share in the July-September period. That compares with $9.41 billion, or $1.70 a share, a year ago.

The previous record for U.S. corporate profit was set in the last quarter, when Exxon Mobil earned $11.68 billion.

Revenue rose 35 percent to $137.7 billion.

On average, analysts expected the company to earn $2.39 per share in the latest quarter on revenue of $131.4 billion.

BT- So it looks like not everyone is suffering from the worst economy since "the Great Depression"! Well done Exxon Mobil, there is no more shining example of US Capitalism(greed) than you assholes! Keep raking in billions and record revenues at the expense of the American people... Way to hold us hostage with $4 gallon gas, but I guess you need that huge surplus to put into alternative fuel research, right! Or are you preparing for the realization that you wont have your puppet W in office much longer? Here's to the day that the drills stop turning and we cruise by the vacant pumps in our soy fueled flying cars! Do not buy gas from Exxon Mobil!

The Cure: 4:13 Dream

Over a month later and one disc shorter than originally planned, The Cure have finally released their thirteenth studio album, 4:13 Dream. Dropped through Geffen Records and produced and mixed by Robert Smith and Keith Uddin, 4:13 Dream represents the more “upbeat” set of tunes from the 33 songs the band actually recorded. It has been hinted that the remaining “dark” tracks will be released as a companion piece in the near future.

Eagles Of Death Metal: Heart On

Jesse “The Devil” Hughes and Carlo Von Sexron (Joshua Homme)—now known as Boots Electric and Baby Duck, respectively—are back with the duo’s third installment of raw and sleazy rock ‘n’ roll titled Heart On. Released on the newly formed Downtown Records label, produced by Josh Homme, and mixed by Alain Johannes and Josh Homme, Heart On was recorded in just 12 days at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, CA.

Hunter S. Thompson: The Gonzo Tapes - The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
Released by Shout! Factory entertainment, The Gonzo Tapes consist of five discs with over 100 audio tracks culled from the good doctor’s basement vault to support the film documentary Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Recorded between the years 1965 and 1975, this extensive audio collection captures an array of Thompson’s sporadic ramblings and mumbled thoughts and ideas both while they happen and in retrospect. The collection also includes a 40+ page booklet full of notes and never-before-seen images.

Snow Patrol: A Hundred Million Suns

Recorded at Hansa Studio in Berlin and Grouse Lodge Studio in County Westmeath, Ireland, with producer Garret “Jacknife” Lee, A Hundred Million Suns, the band’s fifth studio album, completes Gary Lightbody and gang’s transformation from indie rockers to mainstream staples.

Secret Machines: Secret Machines [10/14]

Secret Machines serves as the band’s third studio album and first album since guitarist Benjamin Curtis left and was replaced by former Tripping Daisy guitarist Phil Karnats. Recorded in New York City, produced by the band and Brandon Mason, and self-released on TSM Recordings, Secret Machines holds course down the same droning, fuzzed out path as the band’s previous two albums.

You can check out tracks “Now You’re Gone,” “Underneath The Concrete,” “Last Believer, Drop Dead,” and “Atomic Heels” on the band’s official MySpace page, or stream the entire album on the band’s official website here. Oasis: Dig Out Your Soul [10/7]

Recorded at Studio 2 at Abbey Road Studios, London and Hillside Manor, and mixed at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, Dig Out Your Soul is the band’s seventh studio album. Released by the band’s own Big Brother Records across the pond and by Warner Bros./Reprise in the States, Dig Out Your Soul sees the feuding brothers and company joined by Don’t Believe The Truth producer Dave Sardy.

The Pretenders: Break Up The Concrete [10/7]

Released through Rhino Records, this four-disc boxed set from brothers William and Jim Reid collects 80+ chronologically ordered b-sides, obscure and unreleased material, demo and acoustic versions of well-known favorites, and oddball cover songs. Spanning every phase of the band’s history from their 1984 debut single, “Upside Down”/“Vegetable Man,” to their final Sub Pop releases, The Power Of Negative Thinking is a must own for any fan of these Scottish noise-pop pioneers.

The package also includes a double-sided poster featuring artwork from many of the band’s singles and a hand-drawn “family tree” tracing JAMC’s evolving lineup, new interviews with the Reid brothers, and several rare photos.

Tom Morello - The Nightwatchman: The Fabled City [9/30]

Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello returns with his second album under his singer/songwriter moniker The Nightwatchman. Released through Epic Records and produced by Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden), The Fabled City includes guest performances by Serj Tankian (System Of A Down), Shooter Jennings, and Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction).

Cold War Kids: Loyalty To Loyalty

Following up their underappreciated (outside the blogging community, that is) 2006 debut, Robbers & Cowards, these Fullerton-spawned indie rockers return with Loyalty To Loyalty. Released through Downtown Records, Loyalty To Loyalty is going to have an uphill battle getting proper attention considering the band’s own record label doesn’t even mention the album’s release on its website. I guess they’re expecting us bloggers to do the work for ‘em.

Jenny Lewis: Acid Tongue

Best known for her participation in Benjamin Gibbard’s (Death Cab For Cutie) side project, The Postal Service, Acid Tongue serves as Rilo Kiley co-founder Jenny Lewis’ second solo album. Recorded at Sound Studios in Van Nuys, California, Acid Tongue features an all-star cast of contributors including Elvis Costello, Zooey Deschanel (She & Him), Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle, Zwan), and Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), among others.

Kings Of Leon: Only By The Night

Only By The Night is the fourth studio album from the brothers Followill (plus one cousin Followill). Recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio with their long-time producer Angelo Petraglia and Nashville producer/engineer Jacquire King, Only By The Night has the daunting task of following up their smash 2007 hit, Because Of The Times. Will it (or better yet, can it) live up to the new expectations on the band?

Mogwai: The Hawk Is Howling

Scottish post-rock giants, Mogwai, return with their sixth studio album, The Hawk Is Howling. Dropped on Matador Records, recorded at Chem19 Studios in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, and mixed by Garth Jones at the band’s own Castle Of Doom Studios in Glasgow, The Hawk Is Howling sees the return of producer Andy Miller, who last worked with the band on the 1998 EP No Education = No Future (Fuck The Curfew).

Thievery Corporation: Radio Retaliation

Available as a digital download on iTunes since September 9th, Radio Retaliation, the fifth studio album from trip-hop duo Thievery Corporation, is now seeing a physical release. Recorded in the band’s hometown of Washington, D.C., this “uncompromising socio-political” offering features a cast of musical collaborators including Nigeria’s afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington D.C.’s own godfather of go-go Chuck Brown.

The reggae-infused title track “Radio Retaliation” can be heard on the band’s MySpace page.

TV On The Radio: Dear Science

After grabbing everyone’s attention with 2006’s Return To Cookie Mountain, New York’s experimental rock quintet TV On The Radio return with the release of Dear Science on Interscope Records. With production duties again being handled by multi-instrumentalist, David Sitek, Dear Science has taken a hold of the attention garnered by 'Cookie Mountain' and held on tight.

The Bush administration and the richest bankers in the country, with support of some of the top leaders in Congress, have put a gun to our head: give us your money, or we will sink your economy. Yesterday, Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, threatened the Senate if they failed to pass the $700 billion plan, they would be responsible for causing recession, more joblessness, and pushing more homes into foreclosure.

The bailout package takes our money and gives it to the same bankers and executives who drove the economy into the ground. The pay for chief executives of large U.S. companies is now at 275 times that of the average worker's salary in 2007. It was 25 times greater in 1965. The same bankers who will be given our hard-earned tax dollars refuse to support even the bailout of their own institutions if their obscene salaries are even slightly compromised. "We support the bill, but we are opposed to provisions on executive pay... It is not appropriate for government to be setting the salaries of executives," said Scott Talbot, executive for Financial Services Roundtable, a group representing the bankers.

In Anticipation: 4:13 Dream, Hypnagogic States

The release date for The Cure's upcoming 13th studio album, 4:13 Dream, has again been pushed back. According to the band's official website, the album is now set to drop October 28th in the States.

In the meantime kiddies, the band is set to release the Hypnagogic States EP this Tuesday, September 16th. The 5-track EP (a bonus track will be included with the iTunes digital release) includes remixes of the first four singles off the upcoming album.

Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead: Redefining the Modern Rock Concert Experience

Lack of "fun money" in the bank sucks and can affect even the most dedicated and loyal of music fans. I still get to my fair share of great shows, (large and small venue) but lately there have been less "must sees" and more "maybe sees". This summer, two large venue "must sees" were penned in early on the concert calendar; Radiohead on August 27th and Nine Inch Nails on September 6th.

Radiohead was a great evening in Chula Vista and although the band seemed tired from a long and winding down tour, they did and always do put forth greatness, musically and visually with their genius fusion of eclectic music, light shows and video. Radiohead incorporates an advanced LED laser show and a split view, big screen of each member of the band. This is a wonderful accompaniment to their ethereal style of music and the new songs from "In Rainbows" were equally impressive live and continue the bands ever expanding style of rock deconstruction.

With all due respect to the greatness of Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails tore them a new asshole and in my opinion are the best live show around. The old, gray, Forum roof could barely contain the rock energy pulsing off the stage, throughout the crowd. I hadn't experienced anything like it since Rage Against the Machine dropped the "Battle of San Diego" banner and turned Cox Arena into a human wave pool.

Although the bands NIN and Radiohead historically don't have much musically in common, I have noticed new similarities and at this point in their careers, I imagine the crossover of the bands' fan base is probably greater than ever! We are talking about two of the biggest bands in the world right now and 20 years in the making! Thom Yorke and Trent Reznor are both talented song writers but its their bands as a product that are also on top of their game in so many ways and elevated the fan experience to another level. This is something that has been declining for some time and follows closely along with the demise of the record label. I'm not talking about dancing midgets and miniature replicas of Stonehenge. There is a line between something that becomes distracting versus enhancing the show but most live musical performances have the ability to also tell a visual story and create a complete experience. I had found myself recently avoiding large venue concerts because of over-priced tickets with rising fees, too many people, non intimate setups, poor sound and nothing to really draw you into the vastness of the stage versus the smallness of the bands performing on it. When the visual and the aural come together and work at the same high level of creativity the show transcends from just watching a great band play great music to an amazing rock experience and Nine Inch Nails are the future of this experience.

Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails combine art, technology, politics, and an array of emotion into a live, mind blowing trip of site and sound. Layered series of digital curtains create visual landscapes of light and graphics that accents every note, hit or lyric the band plays. At one point in the show, while the rest of the band gets ready to shift down into a set of "Ghosts" tracks, NIN drummer, Josh Freeze walks out to a digital display of squares and programs his drums on the massive curtain by pushing red squares to white. Reznor finally got to do what he so badly wanted for the 2005 VMAs, which led to his pullout after static from MTV brass. The band performed "The Hand That Feeds" with an image of George W. Bush in the background but added a new twist when the image slowly morphed into the image of John McCain. Good news for Obama supporters, the reaction was twenty thousand middle fingers.

Reznor has also decided to tap into the minds of his "people" and give them the ultimate NIN experience! Along with Radiohead's pay what you feel release of "In Rainbows", Reznor released "The Slip" thanking his fans for their loyal support by saying, "This one's on me." I could go into the correlation between giving away a free album and selling out every large venue around the globe or talk about how 'free" is the newest advertising revolution but this article is already too long, pick up a "Wired" magazine.

What I'm talking about here is having ultimate creative freedom and some really, really, innovative people taking control of every detail and every aspect of what it is to call yourselves Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails. These bands are no longer tied to major labels or a failing system where they are a part of the whole. They are the whole! They have constructed their own team and their own rules and used their creative minds to evolve and reach out and ask, "What do our money spending fans want?" Seems like the bands are happier doing things on their own terms, creating the ultimate experience and controlling their futures. Happier bands, happier fans, sorry record labels...but fuck off!

If the ultimate fan experience is the next evolution in music, than we are all in for a great ride. Some critics will condemn the grandness of such things and only identify with the core or smaller aspects that make bands great because it admits to popularity and accessibility. Those critics and fans will look back in ten years and admit that its alright to like things which millions of other people like when bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails set the bar so high.

Jim Ward's new project Sleepercar

Wikipedia's submission for the band Sleepercar states it actually began during the demise of At the Drive-In. The oldest Sleepercar song, "Fences Down", was written during a sound check at one of At the Drive-In's last shows. After the band parted ways, Jim Ward expressed interest in the genre of alt-country and thought about starting a new band. However, Sparta was formed and became the main focus for Ward. Ward worked on finishing Sleepercar material during down time between Sparta albums and tours. On several of the Sleepercar sessions, Ward was introduced to Chris Heinrich. Heinrich played pedal steel guitar on the Sparta album Threes, Ukulele on Ward's Quiet EP, and pedal steel for Sleepercar. Other members of the band included: Micah Adams (guitar), Clint Myers (drums), Ward's father Jeff Ward (bass), and Gabriel Gonzalez (piano). Gonzalez had also played with Sparta during earlier tours performing songs from Wiretap Scars. The album, West Texas was released in April of '08 and the band is currently touring.

MMW + Radiolarians Tour #3 = West Coast

Back in February, experimental jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood set off on a three-leg, three-album odyssey entitled the Viva La Evolution Tour. The idea was to compose the skeleton of some new tunes, flesh out the compositions on the road, then enter the studio to record the travel tested, finely crafted pieces, and finally do the entire process two more times to create a three-album series called The Radiolarian Series.

Here we are seven months later and the boys are ready to release the fruits of Radiolarians Tour #1. According to an e-mail from Musictoday on behalf of the Medeski Martin & Wood Fan Community, MMW's own Indirecto Records will release Radiolarians 1 on September 30th.

For those of you kiddies too anxious to wait that long, you can pre-order the album from MMW's official website here. According to the pre-order page, the first 300 copies of the album sold will be personally autographed by the trio.

Metallica's Big Vagina

After reading Buzz's insightful post on Dave Grohl interviewing/hanging with Metallica, I read an article on nme.com indicating that Metallica's new album Death Magnetic has leaked on the interwebs.

Checking out the horrifically bad cover art, it appears Metallica have created an album about pussy and how becoming a musical pussy in general has ruined their music and place in rock 'n roll.

The cover has a vaginally shaped coffin with a lot of pubic hair around it (obviously the guys in the band like their muff 70s style, none of this brazilian-waxed landing pad shit). Reaching back to my AP English days, I'd say that by analyzing Death Magnetic's vaginal artwork reflects a belief by the members of Metallica that once you become a pussy, you are essentially trapped in a black hole of pussy-ness with no escape from its deathly magnetic pull.

Lead single, "The Day That Never Came" is obviously about the day the rest of the band hoped drummer/lead cokehead Lars Ulrich would shut the fuck up and stop talking about himself and the band in the third person.

Current downloadable song "Cyanide" talks about how bad the band's musical pussy smells after years of listening to yes men from the record label and being trapped in a recording studio with schlockmeister extraordinaire Bob Rock for the last 15 years.

Chief Pussies James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich have done a tremendous job marginalizing Metallica from a legendary underground speed metal band to a group of spoiled millionaire pussies who felt compelled to hire a life coach to help them work through the issues associated with being spoiled millionaire pussies AND film it for a documentary.

For Death Magnetic, the band has hired Rick Rubin to help them remember what they were like pre-pussy, and to salvage the Metallica brand for the dying record industry. The result is a new album that sounds like chunks of old Metallica albums Pro Tool-stitched together with Hetfield's new 12-Step poetry floating on top.

For your hard work and years of ruining everything you initially stood for, we here at the Tecate Bros say, bravo Metallica. Well played.

Smashing Pumpkins will release new single G.L.O.W. exclusively for Guitar Hero World Tour

This is the first time a band has recorded a new song exclusively for the franchise which will be released afterwards, giving Guitar Hero(R) fans exclusive access to Smashing Pumpkins music before anyone. The new track, bundled with two other Smashing Pumpkins hits, "1979" and "The Everlasting Gaze," will be available post-launch of the game as a three-song downloaded content pack. Additionally, on-disc with the release of Guitar Hero World Tour this fall, The Smashing Pumpkins' singer, songwriter and lead guitarist Billy Corgan will appear as an in-game character and will bring with him "Today," the band's huge hit from the 1993 album Siamese Dream.

Metallica still sucks! Speak the truth Dave Grohl..

Metallica's website http://www.metallica.com/ is reporting that the Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins will be hanging out at the Metallica Headquarters Thursday, September 4, at 6:00 PM PDT, playing tracks from "Death Magnetic" and chatting online with Metallica fans. You can also listen to the event streaming live on http://www.missionmetallica.com/

Lets see if the Foo's have the balls to really speak their minds about the new "Death Magnetic". After all Grohl did write the band a letter asking them to please rock on this one. Alas, I'm sure this will turn into a giant jerk fest and nothing actually honest or critical will be uttered. Grohl seems to thrive on these awkward situations? I recall a story about a drunken Creed singer and notorious knob, Scott Stapp, confronting Grohl after a comedic, emphatic, rendition of "Arms Wide Opened." Lets face it both bands have long become irrelevant to music from an actual musical standpoint and are now riding on the creative fumes of greatness displayed earlier in their careers.

I could only dream of sitting in with the fellas, cracking opening a delicious Tecate and contributing a few of my own comments and questions.

It would go something like this:

BT: "I noticed that you guys really like to make scary faces. Are these new scary faces scarier than say the St. Anger scary faces? And if so, are these in fact the scariest faces we've seen from Metallica or are there scarier faces that we haven't even seen yet that we may see in the future?"

BT: "Lars are you still addicted to cocaine and if so, in the "Day that Never Comes" video are you completely tweaking on blow? It kind of looks like you are with all that dust blowing around, also your mouth is opened."

BT: "James. Can I call you Jim? It seems like you have listened to your fans and critics and maybe even your pal Dave Grohl and tried to infuse some old 'Lica' heaviness back into your sound. There are very similar sounding licks from older Metallica songs in the new album. For instance, in "The Day that Never Comes," the guitars sound familiarly like "The Unforgiven" but then at the end switches to a faster "One"-ish sounding fury. How much of the album is simply cutting and pasting old Metallica riffs into key parts of the new songs? On the new track "Cyanide", you sing "suicide..I've already died..you're just the funeral I've been waiting for..Cyanideeeeeahhh". Is that song about you and Lars losing your hair?"

BT: "Kirk you slay... Your fingering is impeccable as always. Are you high on cocaine right now and are you a Caucasian?"

BT: "And finally Jaso...excuse me Robert Trujillo...my apologies. How would you rate your head banging from 1 to 3 versus for sake of argument, a 1990 permed Jason Newstead or...OR... a live and well, "Kill Em ALL" Cliff Burton before he was run over by the tour bus?"

BT: "Thanks guys."

Lou's Records in Encinitas, CA, has set up a pre-sale for Tone [long rumoured to be titled aTONEment], the first solo album from Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament.

The 10 tracks on the album are said to be 12 years in the making, with help from Three Fish drummer Richard Stuverud. King's X frontman Dug Pinnick makes a guest appearance taking lead vocal duties on "Doubting Thomasina".

According to a message from Colin on the band's official website, Dead Air Space, Radiohead will have a live webcast of their gig at the Santa Barbara Bowl tonight -- the final stop on their North American tour.

The message reads as follows:

Hello! To celebrate the end of a brilliant tour, we're going to webcast the last show here in America. We'll be playing live in Santa Barbara, at the Bowl. It's one of our favourite places to play; I think we've ended tours there before, once even playing a cover of ' cinnamon girl '. It's not too big, in fact it's very intimate, a small arena with a dirt floor, set in pretty countryside. It should be a special night, for lots of reasons, and we're going to try and share as much of it as we can on the webcast. Nigel, our producer, will be helping out getting it to you, so if it goes wrong....It's live!

Thank you so much to everyone who's come and seen us this year; it has truly been the most special and exciting tour for all of us.

No, not that ridiculous Robin Williams - Barry Levinson piece of shit (didn't see it..guessing). The Man of the Year is a great film and continues the increasing trend of great Brazilian Cinema. There is an overwhelming honesty with Brazilian film making that is unmatched.

Synopsis:
Maiquel (Murilo Benicio) has lost a bet and dyed his hair blond. This little event triggers a head-on collision with destiny in which Maiquel goes from nobody to hero to outlaw…all in 24 hours. Based on the award-winning novel by Patricia Melo "O Matador", this vibrant and brazen crime saga follows in the vein of recent Brazilian Film's such as Vincente Amorim's Middle of the World, Walter Salles' Central Station and Fernando Meirelles' City of God.

Queens of the Stone Age and a who's who from the Desert Sessions played a tribute show for their fallen friend and fellow musician Natasha Schneider this past Saturday in Los Angeles. Schneider was one of the primary musicians in the band Eleven (her husband, Alain Johannes, being the other) and played live with Chris Cornell and QOTSA over the years.

Writer/director Stefan Ruzowitzky explores the moral corrosion of Nazi complicity with this tightly wound adaptation of Adolf Burger's fact-based book The Devil's Workshop. Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) may be a talented artist at heart, but his desire for wealth has driven him to use his creativity for more nefarious means. Arrested by the police inspector Herzog (Devid Striesow) at the onset of World War II, Sorowitsch is sent to the notorious Mauthausen concentration camp. It's not long before Salomon's thinly veiled opportunism earns him a relatively comfortable position as the camp's resident sketch artist, and five years later he is mysteriously swept away to Sachsenhausen. Upon arriving at the camp, Sorowitsch discovers that Herzog, now a commandant, is attempting to destabilize the economies of the Allies while simultaneously funding the Nazi war machine by assembling a special team of counterfeit artists to create millions in fraudulent pounds and dollars. As the operation gets under way, Sorowitsch finds the efforts of the team continually undermined by unyieldingly idealistic collotype specialist Adolf Burger (August Diehl). In the months that follow, the team wrestles with their consciences as Axis forces are gradually overwhelmed by Allied might. Pinback nails down 'Autumn' trek

Indie pop-rockers Pinback have mapped out a month-long fall tour that will take them through clubs and theaters across the US.
The outing is scheduled to launch Sept. 16 in Tucson, AZ, and crisscross the country, ending with an Oct. 19 gig in San Francisco. Pinback will also stop in Toronto for an Oct. 7 performance. Details are listed below.
The San Diego-based group's principal players, Armistead Burwell Smith IV (Zach) and Rob Crow, started Pinback 10 years ago and released their self-titled debut in 1999.
Last September, Pinback dropped "Autumn of the Seraphs," it fourth full-length album and second for Touch and Go Records. Like 2004's "Summer In Abaddon," the set was recorded in the band's home studio, but the musicians added more dynamic and aggressive melodies than ever before.
"The biggest difference with this record is we made it sound more like we do live, so it's not as much of a shock when people hear us," Crow recently told Cost Mesa, CA-based newspaper the Daily Pilot. "Live, we are loud and have a lot of energy, but our records tend to have a reclusive, softer sound."
"Autumn of the Seraphs" landed Pinback its highest chart position on The Billboard 200 (No. 69), and reached No. 3 on the Top Independent Albums chart. A couple of songs from the record are streaming at the band's MySpace page.

The Secret Machines will release their third album on October 14th. The record, creatively titled Secret Machines, is the follow up to 2006's Ten Silver Drops, and the first since the departure of vocalist/guitarist Benjamin Curtis. The new album features longtime friend Phil Karnats on guitar and other duties.

Secret Machines, was recorded in the band's adopted home of New York City and produced by the band and Brandon Mason. The first single will be "Atomic Heels".

TV on the Radio set to drop 'Science' on fall trek

Indie rockers TV on the Radio have added quite a few new dates to their upcoming fall trek, and have also produced an extra bonus or fans: a release date for the band's next studio album.
The New Yorkers kick off the trek Sept. 5 in Portland, OR, with the tour aiming for 26 cities after its West Coast leg, which takes up most of September. In October the band heads East, with highlights including a pair of shows close to home in Brooklyn, NY, (10/14-15) along with another back-to-back set in Minneapolis (10/21-22).Detroit garage rockers The Dirtbombs will open the October and November dates, while folksinger Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson will provide support for most of the September shows. The group has set a Sept. 23 release for "Dear Science," its third studio album and the follow-up to 2006's critically acclaimed "Return to Cookie Mountain."
Earlier this year, the band's vocalist/guitarist Kyp Malone and lead singer Tunde Adebimpe teamed with hip-hop outfit The Roots to record a song for "Soundtrack for a Revolution," a currently-in-production documentary directed by Bill Guttentag & Dan Sturman (and executive produced by Danny Glover) for Louveture Films that highlights "some of America's top contemporary musicians as they perform new and vibrant renditions of the Civil Rights Movement's freedom songs--songs originally sung by civil rights protesters in mass meetings, on picket lines, in paddy wagons, and in jail cells throughout the American South," according to a press release.
The group released a four-song live EP, "Live at Amoeba Music," in March of last year.

These Arms Are Snakes - Tail Swallower And Dove - Suicide Squeeze Seattle-based rockers These Arms Are Snakes will release their third full-length, titled Tail Swallower And Dove, through Suicide Squeeze on October 7. The band returned to Seattle's own Red Room to track and mix their latest batch of post-hardcore musings, with the sessions produced and engineered by their drummer Chris Common. Since rising from the ashes of much-loved outfits such as Tacoma's Botch and Minneapolis' Kill Sadie, TAAS have delivered their fans heavy guitar riffs coupled with vocal snarls, and this album promises to offer more of their trademark intensity.

One Day as a Lion - the new project from Zach de la Rocha and Jon Theodore taps into a more energized raw sound that was left behind with the uncertain future of Rage Against the Machine. Raw, political, visceral, and genre-bending, vocalist Zack de la Rocha and ex-Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore blend elements of rock, metal, rap, and punk. The duo released its eponymous debut EP on the Anti label on July, 22, 2008. Zach is back and the machine gun lyrics are blazing behind Theodore's Jon Bonhamesque big beats! this combination works and works well, you hardly miss the thump of Timmy C's bass or Tom Morello's wickety-whack guitar plug scratching. Overlooked in this project is the fact that Mario Caldato Jr is behind the knobs doing what made him a household name working with the Beastie Boys.

The Big Sleep - Sleep Forever Frenchkiss Records 2008
The post-rock/experimental outfit the Big Sleep feature Danny Barria (guitar), Sonya Balchandani (bass/vocals), and Gabe Rhodes (drums). The Brooklyn-based trio creates a brooding batch of psychedelic rock with an indie rock aesthetic. Prior to forming the Big Sleep in 2005, Balchandani made her debut with the stylish noise pop band Hong Kong, while Barria played with Haywood and the Detroit dream pop act Mahogany. They also self-released the You Today, Me Tomorrow EP before landing a recording contract with French Kiss in early 2006. Son of the Tiger marked their LP debut in September.
